This Sunday, October 2, is World Communion Sunday.  We will be joining believers around the world in observing the Eucharist and celebrating the unity we know in Christ.  It has long been a tradition that on this special day a special offering is taken to provide college scholarships for racial and ethnic minority students across the U.S. and worldwide.  During our worship service, as you come forward to receive communion, you will be invited to place a donation in one of the designated baskets, should you wish to.  We will also be celebrating this world communion Sunday by having four breads to represent the “four corners of the world”: Naan bread from India, Churrascas from Chile (gluten free), Middle Eastern Pita bread and Injera bread from Ethiopia.  You can choose whichever you’d like to receive with, and the left overs will be available at coffee hour to keep the feast of the Lord’s table going!  I very much hope you can join us for World Communion Sunday this week. Spread the word and bring a friend!
Peace and blessings, Pastor Jody

October Happenings- There is so much going on in the month of October!  Here’s a quick overview: On October 9th we kick off our Stewardship Campaign, Building God’s Kingdom Together, as we invite you to prayerfully consider the various ways you can support the church.  October 16th will be Laity Sunday as we celebrate the vital role of lay ministry in local congregations.  October 23rd we have our first Youth Group Activity day (Leaf Rake followed by Harvest Party), starting at 1pm.  We round the month off with our Annual Charge Conference, October 29th, at 2pm.

Sunday School- We are diving into the Bible with the Deep Blue Sunday School Curriculum.  An exciting thing happening this year is that out Wednesday Prayer Group will be following the same lesson schedule!  How cool.  We’re hoping we can grow together as we learn together.  We still need Sunday School helpers, so please let us know if you can help one day a month.

Final thought-

The Christian faith is meant to be lived moment by moment. It isn’t some broad, general outline–it’s a long walk with a real Person. Details count: passing thoughts, small sacrifices, a few encouraging words, little acts of kindness, brief victories over nagging sins. —Joni Eareckson Tada

From a Recent Call to Worship:

When we are out and about each day, we encounter many people- at work, out to lunch, at the grocery store, in the doctor’s office. And in those moments, depending on our circumstances, whether we are rushed, distracted, agenda driven or just focused on our own needs, chances are, when we encounter people, we naturally look at them from the outside and in doing so we make judgments. Judgements that are usually wrong.

Imagine if God was the same? If he viewed us only from the outside? Viewed us only by a glance of a disgusted look, harsh statement, an ignorant action or a weak moment?

By His grace God never looks at the outside. God looks at the inside. And God sees things as they really are!

The Old Testament tells us: “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

By the grace of God, we have been given the gift of Jesus- when grace happens, Christ enters… When Christ enters, Christ abides in us…

No other religion or philosophy makes such a claim. No other movement implies the living presence of its founder in his followers.

We are people in whom Christ is happening! What a difference this makes!

On this day, understand the magnitude of God’s love and praise His amazing gift of Grace!

Give thanks for the amazing gift of our savior, Jesus Christ!

From a Recent Call to Worship:

A lot has gone on the last couple of weeks in our world. There has been a lot of despair around the globe with recent events. Tragedy and heartache has come to families and sadness to others who have seen this go on. Innocent lives have been lost to those who want to cast darkness on everyone. For some, hope has been suppressed.

But like this morning, the sun rose and hope springs anew. By the mere fact that we are assembled here, in our little church on the hill, our wonderful house of worship; our faith is renewed. Renewed by scripture, our pastor’s guidance and each other.   Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

We are the messengers of the Good News. Our faith is unwavering. There are people who need to hear what we know. By living our lives under the eyes of God the way Jesus lived and taught us, we will reach people of despair one soul at a time.

We are so blessed because of God’s work and providing for us. Thanks be to God.

Let us give praise to God, the provider of all. Let us think of those who need to see the sun rise on their lives to restore their faith. Where there’s faith, there always is hope.

Thanks be to God!

Snippet from the “Bible-in-a-Year” journey-

Please take a moment and first read Psalms 12-14 found at the following link and then read Pastor Jody’s reflection.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+12-14

Today’s readings in the Psalms really resonated with me.  Between things happening in the world and in my life I really connected with the pattern of lament, concern and questions followed by reliance on God.  Each of the three Psalms starts by focusing on the sin, the injustice, and the difficulties of this life.  Sometimes we look around and it can be so hard to stay positive and to believe this is God’s world.  Would God’s world have so much injustice?  Would God’s world harbor so much hatred?  Would God’s world allow so much evil?

Well, God’s world is also our world, and we have not always made them best of it.  I’m not trying to add to the negativity by saying, “well, it’s our own fault.”  Rather I want us to follow the lead of the psalmists, even as they lament and question and even complain, each of those psalms ends with a return to faith.  It is only natural to be concerned about the state of our world and to notice the injustices around us.  In fact, I’d be very concerned if we weren’t noticing them… if we weren’t appalled and disgusted by them.  It is a much more dangerous attitude to not concern ourselves with evil and injustice.  The psalmists remind us that despite how things appear, and in fact are, this is still God’s world.  The God of love will not let us endure it alone.  The God who is bigger than war and hatred and sin has not, will not give up on humanity.  There is hope.  Always, there is hope.

Live in hope today, friends!

Peace, PJ

Magnifying God

In the words of the great psalmist, “Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!”

When we magnify God, we see Him as He truly is, we see how great and good He is, how His strength will provide for us in our weakness, how He can easily take care of whatever need we have.

It is so important to magnify the Lord…

Most of us would agree that when our problems seem large, God seems small… small God, big problems; But the truth is the exact opposite—recognizing God for who He is- means big God, small problems.

Recognizing God’s limitlessness is the truth behind magnifying the Lord. It’s not that we make Him bigger. Instead, we see Him for His proper size in relation to everything else. We stop to be awed by His infinite greatness and the smallness of everything else—including us.

When we take ourselves out of the equation we realize it is all about God and all for God…

So, take on a new perspective with your current challenges and magnify the Lord to ensure a brand new outcome!

Final thought: (from our June 12 Worship Service)

God, thank you for the immeasurable free gift of your grace. You gave your Son in our place so we wouldn’t have to work to erase our sin. You have already done that for us. Your grace is all we need. We understand that we can never be enough or do enough to merit your gift. Forgive those foolish thoughts that discount your sacrifice, and remind us that you alone can save. You are our hope and salvation. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

What is Pentecost?

Pentecost was first a Jewish holiday, the celebration of the Festival of Weeks.  Later it would be celebrated as a Christian Holiday, observed on the 50th day after Easter (Pentecost means 50th day) and marking the “birthday” of the modern Christian church.

You can read about the first Christian Pentecost celebration in Acts chapter 2 of our Bible.  It is filled with rich, and sometimes confusing, imagery.  Tongues of fire descend from the sky, people make accusations of drunkenness, and people speak in languages that they don’t even know.  It might seem an awfully chaotic and disorderly scene, and indeed some of the people there appeared to feel that way.  It does not seem they stuck to their printed bulletin in church that day.  The Spirit of God had other plans.

It is, in fact, the Holy Spirit of God whom we celebrate on Pentecost Sunday.  This is because it is God’s creative Spirit, the air and breath of life, that enlivened the church and made us the Body of Christ.  The fire, the wind, and the prophetic message were all signs of the wondrous ways in which God was moving among the people.  God is moving still today.

Way back in Genesis 11 the people had tried to make their own way to God.  They took it upon themselves to build a tower to Heaven in Babel.  In the midst of their work God confused their languages to halt their progress.  God did a pretty good job considering there are over 7000 recorded languages today.  Pentecost was an undoing of that, in a sense.  When people are made one in Christ, and are bonded by the life giving breath of God’s Spirit, the many tongues become understandable.  Our pathway to unity in God is not found in frail human effort or ingenuity, but in the gracious and loving activity of God’s Spirit in and around us.

God is still breathing that life giving Spirit into our church today.  Despite claims of decline or moral decay in our culture, I truly believe that God is drawing us forward, renewing and refreshing us continually.  It may not always be what we expect, but if we are open to the unexpected… to the unusual… to a little seeming chaos, we might just find in the midst of it order… and meaning… and purpose… and above all, God is with us.

Wishing you an awesome Pentecost Season and beyond.  “I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together!”- Richard Avery
